Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 Carrying Case

A PDA for Linux® fans: The Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 handheld, operating with Linux® and Java™ architecture.

This review is posted by The Pouch Inc., an independent carrying case maker located in Tucson, Arizona. We attempt to critique the good and bad points of all new PDAs coming to market - and we've have more to say about the protective, colorful case we make for Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 after this:

The Zaurus SL-6000 handheld, which Sharp terms an "enterprise mobile solution" is powered by the Intel® XScale™ PXA285 processor, capable of operating at 400-MHz.  Instead of Microsoft,® this PDA with integrated Wireless LAN (802.11b) operates on Linus Torvald's Linux OS 2.4 platform and Sun Microsystem's Java software.   Therefore, it synchronizes with a Qtopia™ desktop.  Via Java and Linux, it does your "to-do,"  data entry and e-mail chores and is especially proficient at text editing.  The SL-6000 comes with 64-MB of SDRAM and 64-MB of Flash Memory, of which 25-MB are available to the user.  It has a 4-inch, CG Silicon, Transreflective TFT LCD touch panel with back light.  With the especially responsive platform, data entry can be done by stylus or with a 37 key QWERTY "thumb" keyboard, accessible under a sliding cover.  The Zaurus SL-6000 has a Type II CF card slot and a Secure Digital card slot for expansion possibilities.  And it plays both MPEG-1 and MP3 music though two tiny stereo speakers or earbuds.

The downside: The comparitive scarcity of Linux applications when compared to the vast amount of software developed for Windows®.   But what the SL-6000 can do with Linux and Java, it does very well.

Presenting the best buy in a protective carrying case for the Sharp Zaurus SL-6000: The Pouch case made to fit the Zaurus SL-6000 PDA's exact dimensions, using waterproof Neorprene* with additional padding.  A hard plastic shield inside a padded cover protects the display with four layers of tough, cushiony material.  The factory direct price is $29.95 in basic black, or for only $2.00 more, The Pouch will custom-make a carrying case in one of our durable, eye-catching colors.  No one does color like The Pouch!

There's a back pocket on The Pouch case for the Zaurus SL-6000 for program cards that is closed with Velcro. Best of all, a sturdy spear-in clasp on a rugged web belt loop will lock the case for the SL-6000 Handheld securely onto a belt or purse strap.

Linux is a TradeMark owned by Linus Torvald and Java is a product of Sun Microsystems. Nothing herein intends to imply endorsement by Linus Tovald or Sun Microsystems of the protective carrying case made in the Sharp Zaurus SL-6000 Handheld's dimensions by
